Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Jane Harman (D-Venice), Chair of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Intelligence, today issued this statement on the U.N. Security Council sanctions on Iran.
“In the effort to block Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons, I’ve consistently called for crippling economic sanctions on its leadership. Today’s resolution by the U.N. Security Council is tough and fair, and I commend President Obama, Ambassador Susan Rice, and Security Council members for taking strong action.
Sanctions approved today freeze the assets of 15 Revolutionary Guard-related companies linked to proliferation, including shipping lines and air cargo, and prohibit Iran’s investment in uranium mining abroad.
The resolution also bolsters existing sanctions by barring new banking relationships with Iran, including the opening of any new branches or the development of new relationships if there is a suspected link to proliferation.
The fact that this action is multilateral sends a clear message.
Now it is Congress’ turn to act. We must pass the strongest possible Iran sanctions legislation promptly.
Iran must also be on notice that involving itself in future flotillas to Gaza will not be tolerated.”
